Another day in the kayak, this time at Lake Erie Bluffs in Perry Township. It was a beautiful day with the temperatures in the upper 70’s to 80 degrees and blue skies. The lake was a bit choppier than my prior trips this year and would estimate the waves to be up to 12″ in height. The winds were out of the northeast which is somewhat unusual for our area. Today I was with my brother in law, Scott.
The bluffs is a recent addition to Lake Metroparks, acquiring the land and opening the park in the last couple years and this was my second visit. There is a short loop hiking trail with beach access. One could also hike the beach from the Clark Road entrance to the Lane Road entrance
Parking in the Clark road lot you would hike on the trail heading West for the quickest route to the lake. At the “T” in the trail continue to head straight, go down the slight grade and you will be on the beach. My estimate is about a quarter mile walk. Easy to do with two people sharing the load on two recreational kayaks.
The big benefit to kayaking here is the boat traffic is almost non existent along the shoreline where as at Fairport Lakefront Park you must always be on the lookout for speeding boats and jet skis.
You can see the bright red coast hard station and the outline of the Fair Port Lighthouse in the distance to the West. My guess would be a two to three hour kayak from the Bluffs to Fairport beach, depending on weather conditions. Today we paddled a portion of that distance the turned back east and paddled back to Perry Township Park. We pulled out at the township park’s boat ramp for a break before heading back toward the Bluffs. Overall we spent just over two hours on the water today.
